Bruce P. DeMond

Bruce P. DeMond, 73, of Cincinnatus, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 17, 2013.

Bruce was born in Cortland, NY on October 10, 1940 to Lois and Otto DeMond.  He attended Cincinnatus Central School graduating with the Class of 1958.  Bruce graduated with a Masters degree in education from SUNY at Cortland.  He married Dottie Jean Suarez in June 1962.  In 1969, Bruce and his family moved to Alaska where he spent the remainder of his educational career, retiring as Superintendent of Schools for the Matanuska-Susitna School District in 1989.

Bruce is survived by his mother Lois and wife Dottie Jean, three daughters – Betsy in Louisiana, Amy in Alaska, and Lori in Washington, his sister Diana and brother David, both of Florida, 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his only son Robert, and his father Otto.

Bruce recently returned to his childhood home on Dutch Hill in Cincinnatus to do the things he loved; making maple syrup, spending time with his family and telling stories of his fantastic and unbelievable adventures in Alaska to everyone who would listen.

A memorial service will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. with Fred M.S. Downs officiating.  The family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the start of the service at 7:00 p.m.  An educational fund is being established in Bruce’s memory, contributions may be made out and sent to Betsy Pease, 5192 Dutch Hill Road, Cincinnatus, NY 13040.

Guestbook

I was shocked to find an obituary for Bruce in the Anchorage paper as I was looking for another person. Truly, Bruce was an educator's educator. He supported those teachers and employees who were under his supervision. Granny, may you find peace and calmness in this time and know that God will care for you. Dottie and the daughters, I know that he was a wonderful family man. I still carry in my memory the loss of Robby and his dog. That was difficult to understand why he was taken, but now, they can be together. You will be in my thoughts and prayers through these next weeks. May God bless and keep you all.

Last! Ah, yes, it's the finish.
Have you ever heart a man cry?
(Sobs that rake him and rend him,
right from the base of the chest.)
That's how I've cried, oh, so often;
and now that my tears are dry,
I sit in the desolate quiet
and wait for the infinite Rest.  (Robert W. Stevens)

With deepest sympathy,
