Obituary

Daniel Chase Phillips, 73, of South Otselic, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Crouse Memorial Hospital, Syracuse, NY.

Daniel was born in Watertown, NY, on August 5, 1952, the son of the late Herbert Dyer and Hilda Chase Phillips. He was a dedicated and skilled self-employed logger and carpenter known for his unwavering commitment to his craft in the Otselic Valley area. Daniel lived a life marked by hard work, family devotion, and deep ties to his community.

A proud graduate of Carthage High School, Daniel pursued further education at Canton College before embarking on a career that reflected his love for the outdoors and craftsmanship. For many years, he worked as a self-employed logger and carpenter in the Otselic Valley area. His skill with his hands and a steadfast work ethic were hallmarks of his professional life. In addition, for three years prior to a decline in his health, Daniel served the community by driving a school bus for the Otselic Valley Central School, ensuring the safety and care of countless children.

Daniel’s pride in serving others extended beyond his career. He devoted ten years of his life as a volunteer fireman—an honorable commitment that underscored his willingness to help those in need and protect his neighbors.

Among Daniel’s closest surviving family is his beloved wife, whom he married on December 18, 1976, Susan Burghardt Phillips, and together they shared nearly fifty years of marriage—a partnership built on love, mutual respect, and shared memories. He is also mourned by his sons: Mark Phillips of Florida, William Phillips of Sherburne, and Charles Phillips of South Otselic. Daniel’s legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Isabella Phillips and Daniel Phillips, who will carry forward the values and spirit he so deeply embodied.

In addition to his parents, Daniel’s life was also marked by the loss of his brothers, John Phillips and Herbert Phillips, whose memories remain an integral part of his story and family history.

Daniel unselfishly donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program and SUNY Upstate Medical University so that students may continue their education in medicine. There will be no immediate services. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Daniel may be directed to the South Otselic Fire and EMS, 1577 State Route 26, South Otselic, NY 13155. The K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Daniel will be remembered as a man of strength, integrity, and gentle kindness. His profound dedication to his family and his craft leaves a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to know him. The lives he touched stand as a testament to his enduring impact, and his memory will be lovingly upheld by all who mourn his passing.
