Dewitt J. Beebe

Dewitt J. Beebe , 86, of Speedsville, NY, passed away on January 18, 2019, at Lourdes Hospital, after a brief illness.

Mr. Beebe was born January 9, 1934, the son of the late James and Mabel (Briggs) Beebe.  He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Cleland and Ruth Beebe; George and Joan Beebe, and brother-in-law, Paul Dalton.

He is survived by his sister Eunice (Beebe) Dalton, nieces and nephews; Dawn (George) Parks, Carol Beebe, Sharon Weed, Sally Metzger, Christine (James) Worden, Timothy (Ann) Dalton, James Beebe, Mark (Cathy) Beebe, George (LuAnn) Beebe, and Lori (Joseph) Calleo.  Several great nieces and nephews and many friends he has made during his lifetime.

Dewitt graduated from Newark Valley Central School in 1951, and Ridley Business School in 1952.  Starting in 1955 and ending in 2009 Dewitt worked in the retail automotive business as office manager in several dealerships, the last being Maguire Ford in Ithaca, NY.

Dewitt was a member of the U.S. Army, stationed in Washington, DC and Europe from 1953-1955.  He was a life member of the American Legion Post 401 in Owego, NY, and St John's Episcopal Church in Speedsville.

His nieces and nephews will always be thankful for the many wonderful hours he spent with them on vacations, road trips to the state lands, walks in the woods and small boat trips on the Leaking Lena.  He told them ghost stories when they were young and lectured them on world leaders and events.  Teaching them how to drive at the age of 14 was a thrill.  He was a wonderful son, brother, and uncle.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Richard Schaal officiating.  The family will receive friends at the Church on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal  Church, P.O. Box 104, Berkshire, NY 13736 or the SPCA, 1640 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.

Dewitt will be forever in my heart. I worked with him at Maguire for his entire tenure. He was a fun loving individual not above playing some awesome pranks on co-workers. He loved his family, his cats and his work . Go rest high my friend. Save my spot......

I adored Dewitt! He and I shared the same pew for a very long time. We were most always the last two in line for communion.....quite often he would whisper in my ear that I smelled nice. I would wait for him at the alter rail and we would kneel together. When finished, always the gentleman, he would bow then step back and wait for me to do the same before heading to "our" pew! He at least pretended to love the goodies that I baked for him each week...he did love his goodies. I kept a ready supply of candy between us...soft mints and chocolates....his great great nephews will be the only ones to enjoy them now. You could always hear Dewitt rustling with the candy wrappers. His section in the pew is empty now but he will always be my PP(pew partner)!
