Donald J. Cheatham, of McDonough, NY passed away at the age of 86, at his home, while surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born in Middletown, NY, on July 3, 1939, the son of the late Christian and Mae Elizabeth Crans Cheatham. He relocated to this area after his retirement in 2001. Don led a life rich with experiences and devotion to his family and community.
A proud veteran, Don served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era Conflict, where he earned accolades for his marksmanship and the Vietnam Service Medal. His commitment to service exemplified his character, and he often reflected on those formative years with pride.
His professional journey began as a self-employed heavy equipment operator, a career that showcased his skill and dedication. He later retired from the Times Herald Record in 2001, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment to his craft.
Beyond his career, Don was known as an avid outdoorsman who relished the joys of hunting and fishing. His passion for demolition was a defining interest, reflecting his love for the outdoors and the rugged charm of nature.
Don was a devoted family man, married for 33 wonderful years to Sharon Riker Cheatham. He is survived by his cherished children: Lisa McBride of McDonough; David (Lori) Waterman of New Hampton; Mae Cheatham of Warwick; Etta Cheatham of Wurtsboro; Larry (Joanne) Waterman of Circleville; and Andrew Waterman of McDonough. Don’s legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren: Rachel (Michael), Heather (Brian), Meaghan (Rob), Kaitlyn, Jaidyn, Leah, Hunter, Logan, Liam, Kara, Evelyn, and James, along with eight great-grandchildren who brought immeasurable joy to his life.
He is also remembered by his daughter, Trina Blair, and his siblings, having been preceded in death by his brother Tom and sisters Mary Jane and Elizabeth. Each member of his family held a special place in his heart, and his bonds with them were strong and enduring.
A graveside service,with military honors, will be held at the Scotchtown Cemetery in Scotchtown, NY, on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 12:00 p.m.
