Dorothy L. (Nelson) Young

Dorothy L. (Nelson) Young, 79, of Hanover, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at UPMC Pinnacle Hanover. She was the loving wife of David P. Young; together they shared 58 years of marriage.

Born February 9, 1943 in Smithville Flats, NY, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Maude E. (Dunn) Nelson.  Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother; she cherished her family and loved spending time with them. Mrs. Young received a nursing degree in the 60’s and traveled with her husband to 11 different states working as a registered nurse at hospitals along the way. During this time, she had to be very adaptive to different areas of the country and local customs; this served her well when taking care of her own family because she was always the one you could depend on in a stressful situation. Her passion for helping people carried over into all aspects of her life, she helped patients at work, helped her family at home and anyone who needed a helping hand. Dorothy was very active at Arise! EFC Church in Hanover, she was very active in her volunteer work at her church with several outreach programs. Dorothy started the Christmas Shoe Box that was sent overseas, Tender Care which helps new mothers here locally in Hanover, and additional mission work through her church. In her free time, Dorothy enjoyed gardening and knitting.

In addition to her husband, Dorothy is survived by two children, Brett David Young and his fiancé Elsie of Quakertown, Amy Lucinda Ruth and her husband Mike of Westminster; five grandchildren, Deven Young, Scott Young, Pearlyn Young, Alex Ruth, Courtney Ruth; a great grandchild, Lucas Mitchel; four siblings, and many loving extended family members and friends.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by a sister.

A memorial service for Dorothy will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 12:30 p.m. with Pastor Jacob Amidon officiating. Burial will be private in Hillcrest Cemetery in DeRuyter, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Arise! EFC, 109 Flickinger Rd., Hanover, PA 17331.
