Edwin J. Calhoun, 80, affectionately known as "Sonny," passed away peacefully on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the Crown Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Cortland, NY, surrounded by his family.
Born in DeRuyter, NY on October 19, 1944, in DeRuyter, Ed led a life rich in love, dedication, and service.
A longtime resident of the area, Sonny worked in various positions throughout his career, leaving a lasting impact on those around him. His commitment to his community was exemplified by his remarkable 55 years of service as a life member of the Cincinnatus Fire Department. Ed’s unwavering dedication to helping others and protecting his neighbors was a defining characteristic of his life.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Sonny was an avid sports fan, widely known for his enthusiasm for the New York Yankees and New York Giants. He cherished watching games and sharing the excitement of sports with friends and family. Those close to him will remember his love for fishing and hunting, pursuits that brought him joy and tranquility and deepened his connection with nature.
Sonny is survived by his beloved wife of almost 61 years, Sandra (Bartholomew) Calhoun, who stood by his side through all of life's journeys. He is also survived by his daughters, Lisa (James) Prentice of Pitcher and Amy Calhoun of Taylor; his son, Lyle Calhoun of Pitcher; and his brothers, Howard Calhoun of Pitcher and Larry (Dale) Calhoun of McDonough. Edwin was cherished by his stepfamily, including stepbrothers James Prentice of Pitcher, John (Linda) Prentice of Newfield, and Stephen (Karen Borst) Prentice of McLean, as well as his brother-in-law, Zeke Hilsinger of Florida. In addition, he leaves behind one granddaughter, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of love and kindness.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Linda Hilsinger, and his stepfather, Archie Prentice. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visitation will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at the same location, beginning at 1:00 p.m. with Reverends Peter Bush and Palmer Nemeister officiating. Burial will be in Taylor Rural Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Sonny may be directed to a charity of one’s choice.
