McGraw, NY

Howard E. Thornton, 63, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at his home in McGraw, NY, while surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Cortland, NY, on September 5, 1962, Howard was the son of the late Lucy Mae Smith and spent his life dedicated to both his work and those he cherished.

Prior to his illness, Howard had crafted a commendable career as a heavy equipment operator for JBS Dirt in Canastota, NY. His commitment to his profession was reflected in the diligence and care he applied to the work he did. Howard's strong work ethics and dedication earned him the respect of colleagues and clients alike during his tenure.

Howard's family was at the core of his existence. He is survived by his devoted wife, Candice (Brown) Thornton, who shared in the love and laughter of their life together for over 30 years. Their son, Luke (Hilary) Thornton, of McGraw, and stepdaughters Crystal Noto of Horseheads and Nicole Reed of McGraw, held a special place in his heart. Furthermore, he is remembered fondly by his brother Bob (Glenda) Thornton of Cortland; his sister, Bonnie Kneedler of McGraw, and his nephew Matthew "Bubba" Thornton, also of Cortland. Howard's friendships were equally meaningful, especially his bond with his dear friend Brian Hurlburt of Cincinnatus, who stood by him through thick and thin.

Though Howard was predeceased by four siblings, his legacy continues through the love and memories shared with his family and friends. His warm spirit, unwavering support, and kindness will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no immediate services. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In celebrating Howard E. Thornton's life, we remember a man who embraced his role in both his profession and his family with passion and sincerity. His memory will endure in the hearts of those who loved him dearly.
