Iva M. (Allen) Gilbert, 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at her daughter's home in Cortland, NY, surrounded by her loving family.
Iva was born on September 22, 1928, in Livingston Manor, NY, the daughter of the late Ivan and Dorene Richardson Allen. Iva was a cherished member of her community and a devoted family matriarch.
Iva’s life was marked by her unwavering commitment to her family and her work. Alongside her husband, Leland Gilbert, who predeceased her in 1992, she dedicated many years to helping run their dairy farm in McGraw. Her strong work ethic continued through her employment at Smith-Corona and Higgins Supply, where she served the community for many years.
An active member of the United Methodist Church of McGraw, Iva found purpose not only in her employment but also through her volunteer work at the Office of the Aging, where she dedicated 20 years to help others in her community. Her kindness and compassion touched many lives.
In her free time, Iva loved immersing herself in her vegetable and flower garden, nurturing both plants and her connection to nature. She found joy in feeding and watching the birds that frequented her yard. Iva also enjoyed crafting, taking scenic rides, and hosting family picnics at the pond. A true lover of family, she delighted in watching her grandchildren play sports and cherished every moment spent together. Music brought her joy, and she could often be found listening to her favorite tunes.
Iva is survived by her children, Paul (Ann) Gilbert of Kendell, Susan (Jack) Monroe of Cincinnatus, Barbara Babbitt of Cortland and Thomas (Wendy) Gilbert of Marathon; sisters, Marjorie Foote of Groton and Gladys (Donald) Eiler of Canandaigua; half-sister, Donna Northrup of Florida; as well as her in-laws, Gloria Gilbert, Jim McConnell and David Crumb. She also leaves behind many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her children Patricia, Phyllis, Kenneth, and Catherine; son-in-law John Babbitt; grandchildren Lisa, Matthew, and an infant grandson; and sisters, Charlotte, Marian and Ruth.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Iva’s life with a visitation on Sunday, August 17, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of McGraw. Burial will be in East Homer Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Iva may be directed to the United Methodist Church of McGraw, P.O. Box 608, McGraw, NY 13101.
