Rollan C. Elwood, 88, of Taylor, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY.
Rollan was born in the Town of Taylor, NY, on May 11, 1937, the son of the late Carlton and Delia Smith Elwood. He leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication, having committed 24 years of his life to serving as the Town of Taylor Justice of the Peace. Prior to his extensive career in public service, Rollan made his living as a farmer, demonstrating a strong work ethic and deep connection to the land he cherished.
Known for his quiet demeanor and personable nature, Rollan was a beloved member of his community. His contributions extended beyond his professional responsibilities; he was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cortland, where he served as a High Priest.
Rollan’s commitment to preserving local history was evident in his enthusiastic participation with the Taylor Historical Society, showcasing his passion for the past and the impact it has on future generations.
His family was central to his life, and he is survived by his cherished wife, Nancy Frink Elwood, with whom he shared a loving marriage of 67 years. He is also survived by his daughter Judith (Norman) Durand of Cincinnatus, and grandchildren Laurel (Joseph) Furtado of Madera, CA, and Robin Durand of Greene. Additionally, Rollan was a proud great-grandfather to Emily and Joseph Furtado, as well as Timothy Compropst and Maddox Eggleston. He is further survived by his sisters, Joyce Warren of Sidney and Lilla Towers of McGraw.
In addition to his parents, Rollan was preceded in death by his sisters Lois and Linda, and his brothers Carlton Elwood, Jr. and Russell Elwood, who remain cherished in the memories of those who loved them.
The family will be present to receive friends at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3725 Fairview Drive, Cortland, NY, on Friday, December 5, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Marathon Cemetery at a later date.
Rollan will be remembered not just for his civic contributions but also for the warmth and kindness he brought to those around him. His legacy will live on through the family and friends who hold him dear.
