Ronald P. Smith, 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Crouse Memorial Hospital, Syracuse, NY, after a brief illness, while surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Ron was born in Cortland, NY on October 9, 1953, the son of the late Lester and Shirley Sebring Smith. Ron lived a life marked by dedication to both his community and his family. A proud and committed past fire chief and life member of the Cincinnatus Fire Department, Ron’s service and leadership left an indelible mark on those who served alongside him on the community he cherished. His commitment to public safety and his unwavering spirit exemplified the best qualities of a devoted public servant.

Ron is survived by his beloved wife of more than two decades, Dorothy (Barrett) Smith, who stood by his side through life’s joys and challenges. He is also lovingly remembered by his children: Bruce (Michelle) Smith of Virgil, Wendy Smith of Tennessee, Timothy Francisco of Cortland, and Melissa (Austin) DuBois of Plymouth. His legacy continues through his grandchildren Ashley, Dana, Mariah, Zachariah, Christopher, Kaydence, and AJ, as well as several great-grandchildren who brought great happiness to his later years.

His sisters, Linda (Bill) Anderson and Carol Smith of Groton, and Bonnie (Larry) Oliver of Binghamton, also survive him, providing strength and support in this time of mourning. The extended family, including aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins, remember him with affection and respect.

In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Francisco, as well as his siblings Bruce Smith and Rhonda Allen. Their memories remain cherished by all who knew Ron.

Funeral services for Ron will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Palmer Neumeister officiating. Burial will be in Wayside Rest Cemetery at a later date. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, March 28, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until the start of the service at 1:00 p.m.

Ron’s life was one marked by selflessness, loyalty, and love. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by those whose lives he touched, forever holding a place of respect in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
