Stephen Thomas Davis

Stephen Thomas Davis, 64, of Marathon, NY, passed away on July 28, 2023 at his home while surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Cortland, NY, on October 13, 1958, Steve was the son of the late Thomas J. (TD) Davis and Dorothy M. (Fitzpatrick) Davis. Steve grew up in the village of Homer and built a home in Freetown in 1985. Steve genuinely loved living in the country, and, like his father, took great pride in keeping his home and lawn immaculate.

Steve was employed by Cortland Cable Company since 1984 and was recently retired. He was a member of the Maple Hill Golf Club. A natural athlete, Steve also enjoyed bowling, softball, baseball and shooting. He will be remembered for the many parties he hosted for friends, family and co-workers, and also for his legendary chicken spiedie barbecues. Steve worked hard, played hard and truly lived life to the fullest. He loved to laugh and tease, and was a good friend to many people.

Steve is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joanie (Barrows) Davis of Freetown and by his son Tom Davis of East Freetown. In addition to his sister Linda O’Donnell, and brother Danny (Brenda) Davis, all of Homer, he is also survived by granddaughters Madison (Mason) Boyer and Kennedy Boyer of McGraw, brother and sisters-in-law Dale (Stacy) Barrows of Freetown and Christine (Kellie) of Lowell, Mass. Also by nieces and nephews Kelli Griswold, Lisa (Andy) Hull, Bill (Jesse) Bump, Cindy (Steve) Brown, Derek (Lauren) Davis, Shannon (John) Lawrence, Hannah (Tyler) Davis and Luke Barrows, several cousins and many friends.

Our family’s sincere gratitude goes to Barbara Dady, RN of Hospicare of Ithaca/Cortland for her skill, patience and kindness. Thank you to everyone at the Renzi Cancer Center in Cortland for Steve’s excellent care. He grew to think of you as friends.

Steve was predeceased by his sister Pamela Davis in 2021 and by his beloved daughter Emily Christine in 2017.  He will be laid to rest next to his daughter in the Marathon Cemetery. 

Services will be private. Donations in Steve’s memory may be made to the Marathon Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 131, Marathon, NY13803 for restoration and maintenance.
